Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department to provide the highest quality of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Medical Service to the community of Garrett County MD. , and surrounding jurisdictions. This is done through dedicated volunteers who are committed to team work, improving equipment, and continuous training.
Services of the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department
Fire Suppression:
Fire is an everyday threat in a person's life be it at home, in a vehicle, or at work. The OVFD is prepared to address this concern rapidly, safely and effectively. All members are trained through the Maryland Fire and Rescue Insitute in Firefighter I and some members advanced to Firefighter II. The use of draeger air packs and air monitors to go into harsh environments. Also the department operates 1 Class A engine/rescue, 1 Class A tanker, 1 ladder truck, and 1 mini pumper. Constant maintenance and in house training is done to provide quality fire suppression to the community.
Rescue/Special Services:
As the world is constantly developing and people are constantly on the move the OVFD works to be prepared for emergencies in this environment. The department is equipped with a full complement of holmatro extrication equipment, airbag and rescue jack system for whatever may need lifted. The engine/rescue is also equipped with tools such as air chisels and air saws to extricated victims out of many places.
The OVFD is equipped with a 6 wheeled ATV in order to access areas where large equipment may not be able to. It is used to assist in brush fires, and rescues. Another special service unit the department has is a Hazardous Materials decon trailer. It is utilized to assist in decontamination throughout the southern end of Garrett County if need be. Some members are trained in hazardous materials operations and train other members to use this equipment.
Emergency Medical Services:
Trauma and medical emergencies can strike at any time in a person's day. The OVFD is prepared to assist the community when this occurs. The department has personnel trained in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Emergency Medical Technicians, and Paramedics to help the citizens of Garrett County. The OVFD has one Basic Life Support Engine/Rescue to respond along with the surrounding EMS companies during these events.
Public Safety Education:
In order to spread safety around the community the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department makes appearances yearly at local schools and community functions to spread the word about safety. The department works in conjunction with surround departments, Garrett County Department of Public Safety, Garrett County Sheriff's Office, and Cumberland City Fire Department. |
