VICTIM OF A FALL FLOWN FROM SWALLOW FALLS STATE PARK

The Department of Public Safety alerted crews Monday afternoon to Swallow Falls State Park for a subject that had fell approx. 15 feet on the rocks.   Upon arrival of fire & EMS units, members of the Park Service had packaged the male juvenile and was transporting him out,   The crew set up a landing zone and awaited the arrival of MSP Trooper 5 for air transport to the trauma center in Morgantown, WV.
 
VEHICLE INTO A TREE WITH HEAVY ENTRAPMENT

The Department of Public Safety alerted crews from Stations 40 & 9 Saturday afternoon for a vehicle accident with injuries on the Garrett Highway, North of Oakland.   With a crew from Oakland in station they were on the street within one minute of being dispatched.  They arrived  on scene and founs a single vehicle into a tree with heavy damage.   The passanger had removed himself and was laying on the ground with severe chest pains.  The female driver was still in the vehicle with both legs entrapped by the floorboard.   The crew worked for 20 minutes before being able to free her from the wreckage.   Both patients were fully  emoblilized  on long boards and transported by awaiting crews from Southern Garrett (Co 9) to Garrett Memorial Hospital
 
Truck Fire On Maryland Highway

As crews were still on the scene of the Shreve Road fire, the Department of Public Safety alerted Station 40 for the Tractor Trailer fire on the Maryland Highway at Weber Road.   This sent the  crew  standing by from Terra Alta (Co. 160)  along with Truck 44 to the scene.   Crews arrived and found the trucks brakes on fire and quickly extinguished them.   Crews returned within 20 minutes to station.
 
Reported Out Building Fire Turns Into Two Alarmer

The Department of Public Safety alerted units for a reported out building fire at 405 Shreve Road at 1541 hrs.   Engine/Tanker 46 responded with a crew of four.  With the crew being several miles out and a large column of heavy black smoke in the distance, Chief 40 requested the working fire assignment.   Once arriving, the found a two story 30 x 50 garage well off. The second alarm assignment for tankers was  soon requested.   The crews went to work bringing the fire under control in about 20 minutes.   Crews remained on the scene for several hours  knocking down and extinguishing remaining hot spots.  The fire is believed to accidental in nature and is under investigation by the State Fire Marshals Office.

Special Call - Truck 44 to Frostburg

Allegany County units were alerted at 0018 hrs for a reported structure fire at 1 West Main street in Frostburg.  The initial report was smoke showing from the three story building.  With  crews from  Frostburg arriving they quickly upgraded to a working fire. The fire went to 4 alarms bringing over 30 units to the scene  from 3 states.  Around 0330 hrs command  requested Truck 44 to respond.   The crew of five responded and after the fifty minute ride arrived and set up on Main Street.  The crew worked to control hot spots and extension through out the building, for several hours. The crew returned back to station around 1030 hrs the next morning
 
Truck 44 on Deep Creek Structure Fire

The Department of Public Safety alerted crews Saturday evening for a structure fire  at 515 Gleanings Drive, Mchenry in Company 30's first due.  This sent Truck 44 with a crew of three responding from Oakland.  Once arriving, Chief 30 (King) assigned the crew to check the attic area for extension.  With nothing found  they were then assigned duties of pulling ceilings and removing debris  from the residence.The crew remained on the scene for about one hour before clearing.   The fire was caused by a lightning strike  to the residence.

Rules for the Event
1. Ticket stub must be presented for entry into the event. Only 1 guest will be permitted
with guest ticket. All persons attending the event must wear the supplied arm band
during the entire event.

2. Any unsold tickets become the property of the Oakland Volunteer Fire
Department and will be raffled on tip boards during the event.

3. Winners must show ID to claim prizes.

4. Winners may claim cash prizes until 6:00 p.m. on event date. Checks will be
mailed to all winners not claiming prizes on event date. Winners from additional
raffles sold the day of the event have 30 days to claim prizes. After 30 days, all
unclaimed prizes become the property of the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department.

5. All parties on ticket must be present to claim prize.

6. You must be 21 to consume alcoholic beverages. You must be 18 to purchase pull
tickets and tips.

7. When paying by check include: driver’s license number, home phone number and
mailing address. A returned check will be assessed a $25.00 fee.

8. Neither the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department, its members, sponsors, nor
businesses suppling prizes assume any liability for any claims for damages, injury
or death arising out of the possession of any prize obtained through this ticket. By
accepting this ticket, the holder acknowledges that limitation on liability.

9. Unruliness or misconduct will not be tolerated. Violators will be asked to leave the
premises.

10. Winners are responsible for any and all state and federal taxes that may apply.

11. No carry-out (food and drinks).

12. All decisions made by the O.V.F.D. Harley Party Committee are final.

TICKET DRAWING PROCEDURE

• There will be 300 tickets sold, 296 of which prior to the event. Ticket #001 will be raffled off after the doors open and just before the drawing begins. Ticket #100 will be raffled off after the beginning of the drawing and just before the 100th ticket is drawn. Ticket #200 will be raffled off after the 100th ticket is drawn and just before the 200th ticket is drawn. Ticket #040 (the last of the 300) will be raffled off after the 200th ticket is drawn and just before the 276th ticket is drawn.

• All 300 balls will be drawn, with the final one being the Grand Prize winner.

• Other winning numbers will be the first, 20th, 40th, 60th, 80th, 100th, 120th, 140th, 160th, 180th, 200th, 220th, 240th, 260th, and 280th ones drawn. The winner of the first one drawn will have the option of immediately taking $250 cash, or may instead defer, immediately take $100 cash, and have the ball replaced into the machine before the next draw for a chance to win additional prizes. The remaining
winners (every 20th one drawn) will have the option of immediately taking $150 cash, or defer and have the ball replaced into the machine before the next draw for a chance to win additional prizes.

Truck Fire on Third Street
April 30, 2009     0248 hrs
Dispatch alerted crews from Station 40  for a reported tractor trailer fire on Third Street at the Sheetz Store.   As crews  were arriving at the firehouse which was  just a half block from the fire scene they found  a auto transport trailer loaded with automobiles heavily involved.   The crew of five on Engine/Tanker 46 took position after hitting the closest hydrant and placed two 1 3/4 inch hand lines  in service.   Another crew on Engine/Rescue 43 arrived soon after and assisted with containing the fire which was brought under control in under five minutes.   The fire heavily damaged the trailer and four vehicles it was hauling.   Crews returned to station by 0400 hrs.
 
Working Structure Fire on Sugar Lane

04/23/2009    1240 HRS
As a crew from Station 40 was preparing to assist was an auto extrication drill at Southern High School the Department of Public Safety hit the tones for a structure fire at 127 Sugar Lane. This sent the Engine/Rescue with a crew of four responding. As the crew arrived the laid out at the end of the driveway for Engine 163 (Terra Alta) to pick up and establish a tanker shuttle operation. The crew encountered heavy fire and extreme heat in the basement with extension into the first floor. As one crew was knocking down the fire in the basement, another made entry into the first floor finding the floor already burnt through. Crews were able to knockdown and contain the fire after a good 20 minutes workout. They worked for about another hour pulling walls and ceiling to control hot spots. One firefighter received a knee injury and was treated at Garrett Memorial the following day. The State Fire Marshalls Office is investigating.

Moonies Pub Donates to the
Oakland VFD

Moonies Pub  in Oakland donated $1,636.00 this past Friday evening to the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department  as part of their guest  bartender nights.    Money was raised by selling chances for prizes that was donated for the event along  with the bartenders turning over their tips.   Guest bartenders  were O.V.F.D. members Denny Murray and Phil Rook.   Other Fire Department members assisting were John Feather, Jeff Hinebaugh,  and Rebekah Durst.   Moonies staff who assisted were Jeff Kurilla  (owner), Robin Bittinger (manager), Jason Finch, Melody Miller, and Kathy Lohr.  This coming Friday  the guest bartenders will be the Simpsons with proceeds going to the Oakland Youth Football League.  The events run from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M.

Structure Fire on Shady Dell Road

April 12, 2009     1330 hrs
The Department of Public Safety  alerted crews for the reported structure fire at 2837 Shady Dell Road.   The crew on Engine/Rescue 43 arrived to find heavy fire  on Side D of the residence of the single family dwelling.   They quickly went to work   and had the fire knocked down within 10 minutes.    Although  the occupants were not at home at the time of fire, they lost two family pets.   No injuries were reported and  the fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshalls Office.  Lt Matt Beachy had the Shady Dell Command.

Assist to Co. 120 (Gorman) on Structure Fire

April 11, 2009    1234 hrs
The Department of Public Safety alerted units for a Structure Fire at 5510 Gorman Road. This sent  Engine/Rescue 43 and Engine/Tanker from Oakland to the scene.  Units arrived and located a fire in the basement that extended into the walls of the balloon frame type structure.   Crews returned to station by 1430 hrs.

Congratulations to Oakland F/F James (Bug) Reckart and his wife Christina of the birth of their daughter Natalie Paige on Sunday April 5, 2009 at 0545 hrs.  According to the proud father, mother and daughter are at home and doing well.  We look forward to both of them being back around the firehouse in the very near future.

The Department of Public Safety received a call for a structure fire at  1477 Maryland Highway alerting Stations 40, 20 ,   Before units had responded  the property owner notified dispatch the fire was out and all units could go in service.   Then at 1349 hrs units were alerted for the electrical fire at the same address.   Lt 40 (Hinebaugh) arrived and  advised he had fire in the attic area and to start a full assignemnt on the call.   Units arrived and made a quick knock down on the fire.   The fire origionated when a meter socket on the building shorted and exploded.    While units were beginning to clear they were alerted to  to 2000 block of Maryland Highway for the Flue Fire.   This sent Engine 23 and Truck 44 to the scene.    Crews arrived and chained the flue and advised the homeowner to have it cleaned and checked .   All units cleared by 1500 hrs
 
Structure Fire on Baker Farm Road
4-8-2009 04:39
The Department of Public Safety alerted units around 0430 hrs for the structure fire on Baker Farm Road near Loch Lynn.  As units were responding, dispatch advised they had received calls reporting a working fire at that location.   As the crew on Engine/Rescue 43    got close to the scene they encountered heavy fire on both floors with a partial roof colapse.  They dropped a 3 inch supply line, which was picked up by Engine 22 (Deer Park) and proceeded back the narrow lane to the residence.    With the lone resident being accounted for and the possibility of further collapse interior operations were out.  Crews went to work with 2 1/2 inch hand lines and knocked the bulk of the fire down before  dropping back to the   1 3/4 inch lines.     Crews were on the scene for approx four hours before returning.   No injuries were reported.   The fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshalls Office.    Chief  Collins (Deer Park) had water supply, and Chief Steyer (Goeman) operations

Snow Storm Brings Multiple Accidents
4-7-2009 07:00
The Department of Public Safety alerted  units from stations 40 and 9 for the vehicle accident with rollover in  the  4000 Block Garrett Highway.  Crews arrive to find a single vehicle on it side with the driver out.   After being checked by EMS  she refused treatment. As units were clearing they were advised of a vehicle into a pole in the 8000 Block of Garrett Highway.   They arrived to find the driver out and refusing treatment.     At approx 1030  hrs   crews were alerted for the vehicle accident with entrapment on the Hutton Road.
Crews arrived to find a SUV had lost control on the snow covered roads and overturned  several times landing upright on an embankment.   The crew went to work popping the door and placing the driver on a long board.   She was transfered to the awaiting ambulance and transported to Garrett Memorial Hospital Priority 1.
 
Structure Fire on South Third Street
03/19/2009
Units from Oakland, Deer Park, Gorman, Terra Alta, Air 3 from Deep Creek, and Southern Rescue were alerted to south third for a structure fire. Paramedic 79 (Hinebaugh) arrived on scene and advised heavy smoke showing. Engine/Rescue 43 responded with 6 and Truck 44 responded with 3. Personnel from 43 advanced a hose a line into the front door of the residence. After further investigation personnel found a small fire in the basement of the house. The occupant accidently poured gasoline onto a woodstove. The fire was quickly extinguished and ventilation began. Command 40 cancelled all incoming units; holding 43, 44 and Engine 23 (Deer Park). Units were on scene for 30 minutes.
