04/30/2010
Crews were alerted for a report of a Natural Gas leak along the Garrett Highway, North of Oakland. As the crew was approaching they began to smell gas several blocks from the reported location.  They arrived in the area of the old County Roads Garage  and found a construction crew working on a job site.   First guess was they had severed a gas line. Those crews were shut down and evacuated from the area.  Columbia Gas was requested  to respond to the scene. Soon after, as many as eight other businesses reported odors of gas in their buildings.  They too were evacuated, and all traffic detoured from the area.   After a extensive investigation a large oil spill of gear oil was located in the parking lot at
a nearby auto parts store.   The auto parts store took care of the clean up and removal of the spill, while Columbia Gas and fire crews checked the businesses and determined them safe for reentry.

04/02/2010
The Department of Public Safety alerted units from Oakland & Deer Park for a investigation of smoke in the building at the American Legion on Memorial Drive in Oakland.  As Chief 40 (Feather) was approaching the scene on his way to the firehouse he noticed smoke in the air.  As he drove by the building, heavy black smoke was pushing from the eaves.  He immediately requested a working fire dispatch.   Engine/Rescue 43 arrived about 3 minutes later, caught the hydrant and positioned on Side A of the building just as fire broke through the roof.   Chief 40 then requested a second alarm assignment.  The crew gained entry, but was unable to find any visible fire on the main floor and was soon forced out due to high heat and zero visibility.  Truck 44 soon arrived and took position on Side A/B  corner and set up for a water pipe operation.  Engine/Tanker 46 arrived and took up position on Side B.  Units from Deer Park & Aurora  caught additional hydrants and supplied the truck and provided additional hand lines.  The crews from Gorman set up on Side C with Truck 124 and Engine 122 supplying them.  With all available hydrants being utilized, a dump tank operation was set up on Fourth Street to supply the units operating on Side C.  Chief 30 (Jason King) had water supply operations.  With the fire self venting and the ladder pipes knocking down the bulk of the fire,  crews were able to make their way to the second floor, still finding very little fire.  They soon discovered the entire attic area to have been  well off.  The crews went to work pulling walls and ceilings knocking down remaining hot spots.  Tower 5 (Kingwood) was requested an an additional truck, but was not needed.  Their crew however did assist with pulling ceilings.  With breathing air supplies  running low, Air/Light 38 from New Creek, WV was requested.  Crews remained on the scene until around 0400 hours.  The Maryland State Fire Marshall is investigating.  Chief 40 held command during the entire incident, while Assist Chief 40 (Rook) had operations.
